Not
only does my Prius get me great gas mileage, it also teaches me to be
a more efficient driver, thus using less gas and being a bit more verde.
I remember when I was test driving new cars with my sister, I had two
very unique responses to two very different cars. One car I was considering
was the VW GTI, a 200+ horsepower of a car that was quite sporty and
stylish. My sister noticed that when I was test driving this car, I
was punching the gas off of stops and weaving in an out of traffic.
My driving was much more reckless...and FUN. But when test driving the
Prius, she pointed out that I wasn't even driving the speed limit and
that I had both hands on the 10 and 2 positions the entire time. Basically,
I was driving like a senior citizen. And I hate to say it, she's correct.
The Prius has a feature in which you can view a screen which constantly
gives you feedback on your gas efficiency. You basically end up staring
at this screen the entire time, adjusting your acceleration foot to
get the best gas mileage. Thus, I find myself coasting more, punching
the gas less, and maintining a steady moderate speed [65 mph] rather
than having lots of accelerations and decelerations and speeding above
75 mph. I used to average 80 mph when driving on the freeways, now I'm
content between 65-70 mph and sometimes, I'm even down at 55 mph, you
know, the speed limit from 1970. Each time I fill my tank, I try to
average better than I did before and am getting pretty good. This past
fill-up, I averaged 46 mpg which is my best yet. So, if you're considering
buying a Prius, know that not only will it give you better gas mileage,
it will also teach you how to drive so that you get even better gas
mileage. But as a former car guy, I have to say that driving is not
as fun as it used to be but I don't miss it.
