I
was pleasantly surprised by my 10-miler. Having done a 60+ mile ride with
about 6,000 feet of climbing the day before, I was using the 10 mile race
as a glorified training day. I felt horrible during warm-up and decided
to just start the race slow and build or unbuild depending on how I felt.
I took the first mile out at 6:30 pace which was slow, but understandably
so because there were a number of climbs. In fact, sensing the course
was hilly, I knew it would play to my advantage. I knew I didn't have
speed because I had no track workouts under my belt but I did manage to
do two days of hill repeats so I knew I had some strength. I started in
10th place or so and slowly worked my way up to 6th or 7th place by the
3 mile mark. As the run progressed, I slowly began to feel better and
more confident. As I gained confidence, I tested myself and began to push
the pace somewhat. One of the unique features of this race is that we
get to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. Because there was a 10K race
that started with us, there were tons of runners by the time us 10-milers
got to the bridge. It was crazy, I had to weave in and out of people.
It was sort of like being in a video game. By mile 5, I was in 6th place
and held this position, unchallenged, until the finish. My finish time
was a 1:03.09, about a 6:19/mile pace which isn't bad considering the
course was pretty hilly and windy. I'm slowly losing the ironman shuffle
in my gait and I am beginning to regain some of the run speed I had as
a youngin'. Still not on my toes as much as I would like but the muscles
are coming back and I'm confident I'll have something by Wildflower Olympic.
Things are looking pretty good and I've got some good benchmarks for the
season thus far.

| Once
again, I'll be racing with Team Zoom. Keith and Andy have assembled quite
a team this year. Simply put, the members are damn fast! We had a training
camp in Calistoga over the Easter weekend and the training was amazing.
We even had world champion Leanda Cave head out on a ride with us. I'm
fortunate to have a multisport shop like Zoom (San Francisco, CA) supporting
me with clothing, nutrition, bikes, a mechanic (thanks James), and teammates
to train with. It makes it a lot easier to keep the sport fun. I also
want to give a shout out to Clif Bar because I am a lifer when it comes
to their products. My training partner Chris Randall is taking some time
off from triathlons since his first baby boy was born but I hope to head
out on a run or bike with him and test out some new Clif products. |
